Acoustic glass

Acoustically insulating glazing can help keep noise outside so you can enjoy your living space in peace and quiet.

How does it work

Noise levels are measured in decibels (dB). A comfortable sound level is around 35dB in daytime and 30dB at night.

Acoustically insulating glass cuts out excess sound and the harmful effects of noise

The acoustic glass within a double-glazed unit comprises a special interlayer which acts as a dampening core to prevent sound frequencies from vibrating from one pane of glass to the other. This absorbs and weakens sound energy, helping to act as a barrier to noise.

This plastic interlayer also has the additional safety and security properties of laminated glass (see “safety and security glass” section).

We find that different thicknesses of glass work the best. 4mm glass with 6.4 laminate works well but for the best sound insulation we use 10mm glass with 6.4 laminated

Solar control glass

Benefits

Using a solar control glass allows for large areas of glazing without excessive heat build up in summer. This is particularly useful in glass conservatory roofs or south facing glazed areas.

• Reflects up to 2/3 heat from the sun to keep interiors cooler, even with large areas of glazing such as conservatories.
• Less need for costly air conditioning or unsightly blinds for maximum light and a feeling of space.
• An energy efficient way to keep interiors cooler.
• Filters uncomfortable glare from the sun, whilst letting in lots of natural light.
• An attractive and luxurious alternative to plastic roofs.

Bioclean self-cleaning glass

How does it work

A transparent coating on the outside of the glass harnesses the power of both sun and rain to efficiently remove dirt and grime.

Exposure to the UV rays present in daylight triggers the decomposition of organic dirt and prevents mineral dirt from adhering to the surface of the glass. It also turns it “hydrophilic” meaning that when it rains the water sheets across the glass, without forming droplets, rinsing away the broken down dirty residues.

Only a small amount of sunlight is required to activate the coating so the self-cleaning function will work even on cloudy days. A simple rinse of water during dry spells will help keep the glass clean.

Benefits

Self-cleaning glass does not need to be cleaned as frequently as normal glass but it is not 100% maintenance free.
